Why were art centres originally set up in Britain?
I’m looking for a brief history of why a lot of art centres were originally set up. I’m sure I remember hearing once that many were set up after WWII to aid regeneration.
That is certainly true of the South Bank Centre.
The Barbican has an art centre too, which was designed for the needs of the residents there, and to enhance the project.
Others, such as the Whitechapel, are much older, and were set up to bring culture to working class districts.
This is similar to the ambitions of the galery at Port Sunlight
